🌹 5 Flower Hacks Florists Don’t Want You to Know

You just received a beautiful bouquet — but how do you make it last? As local florists, we’ve picked up a few tricks over the years. Here are our favorite insider flower hacks that most people don’t know, but should.

Use these tips to keep your blooms fresh, full, and fabulous — whether you got them from us (we hope so!) or somewhere else.

💡 Hack #1: Cut the Stems at an Angle

Always trim your stems at a 45° angle before placing them in water. This gives the flower a larger surface area to drink from — meaning better hydration and longer life.

📝 Bonus tip: Re-cut them every few days to keep them fresh.

💧 Hack #2: Remove Leaves Below the Waterline

Leaves that sit in the water rot quickly and create bacteria that shorten the life of your flowers. Before placing your stems in the vase, remove any leaves that would sit in water.

🌿 Pro tip: Bacteria = bad. Clean water = happy blooms.

🧂 Hack #3: DIY Flower Food with Pantry Items

Ran out of the flower food packet? Mix your own! Try this:

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  • A few drops of bleach

  • 1 quart of lukewarm water

This feeds your flowers and keeps bacteria away.

🌫️ Hack #4: Mist the Petals

For delicate flowers like hydrangeas and roses, a quick mist helps them stay hydrated — especially in warm rooms. Just a light spritz with clean water can extend their beauty.

🔁 Hack #5: Change the Water — Often

We can’t stress this enough. Every two days, dump out the old water, clean the vase, and refill with fresh room-temperature water.

💐 Fresh water = fresh flowers. It’s that simple.
